About Jody Shell Art

The inspiration for my work, which is semi abstract in style, comes from my immediate world as well as memories that emerge. I am fascinated with the process of building up a textured surface made of patterned papers and then using that as the foundation for the painting itself.

I remember as a child being intimidated by the blank white page. I could, however, work for hours putting together snippets of paper or fabrics in order to create a base for drawings, paper dolls, and imagined environments. The act of adding smaller pieces in order to create a rich surface was where the joy began for me then as it does now.

If asked to describe my work I would say that it tends to have a sense of playfulness with color and expressiveness as the most obvious elements. I hope that as the viewer considers the painting they are hit by a deeper, more emotive sense hidden within.
